InsurTechNZ members are invited to contribute to an independent academic research project. The Insurtech Partnership Survey is a cross-community benchmarking exercise to examine how insurers and early-stage ventures are partnering in 2026, i.e., what types of propositions are being developed, how alliances form, what the main opportunities/challenges are, and how decisions get made between partners when the outcome is uncertain.
The survey is being conducted by Jamie Macgregor, a PhD candidate at the University of Southampton, in collaboration with the Global Insurtech Alliance and participating insurtech communities worldwide.
Who should take part?
The survey is designed for anyone directly involved in insurer-venture partnerships, including:
– Insurtech ventures at any stage
– Insurer innovation teams and business development leaders
– Corporate venture capital arms of insurance groups
– Investors active in the insurtech space
If you are working on, or have recently completed, a partnership between an insurer and a venture, whether at the exploration, proposition design, pilot, or live stage, your experience is exactly what this research needs.
What do you get back?
All participating communities will receive the aggregated findings as an open benchmarking report later this year. An independent, cross-community view of insurer-venture partnering in 2026, grounded in academic research rather than commercial interest. If you identify InsurTechNZ as your community when completing the survey, the researchers will provide a community-level summary to see how New Zealand compares globally.
What comes next?
The survey is the first stage of a wider PhD research project. Following the survey, a small number of insurer-venture partnerships will be invited to participate as a case study involving a series of short interviews over six to nine months examining how specific propositions developed in practice between partners in a venture. Participation in the case study is entirely voluntary and separate from the survey.
The survey takes approximately ten-to-fifteen minutes to complete and will remain open throughout August 2026 into early September.
